My very first experience “boondocking” at Walmart. Everybody’s gotta do it once, right? My plans had changed and I didn’t have reservations so I thought might as well give it a try and it’s free. This was a 24 hour Walmart Super-center in Selma, CA, which also happens to be the raisin capital of the world.
They ask you to park between the Big 5 and the Walmart if you are going to stay overnight. Slept well from about 11:30 to 5:30. Yes, there is traffic noise and train noise but it didn’t seem to affect my sleep. The parking lot was well lit, there were security patrols all night, and there were 2 or 3 other motor homes there as well.
My only negative would be that there weren’t a lot of places for the dogs to potty. They did enjoy the 2 walks we took around the shopping plaza. Best place to potty — there is an area of dried out landscaping between the Pizza Hut and the Baskin Robbins. Don’t forget to SCOOP THE POOP!
The Sun Maid Market is a little gift shop attached to the main office of the Sun Maid company. The clerks were friendly and there were a lot of choices on gifts. I bought a t shirt for myself and some chocolate covered raisins for others.
After visiting the raisin center, we drove over to the Walmart about 3:00 pm. Right now in Selma there is lots of road construction, don’t know how long this project will be ongoing, but I had to drive out of my way a number of times for several miles because some of the turns were impossible in my motor home.
